Rock Songs I Wrote and Recorded to iPhone on MultiTrack

Post by Fire Man »

I'm doing a little recording project, playing all the instruments (drums, bass, guitars) and recording to iPhone 3G. I set certain rules for myself.

1) All tracks must be recorded to iPhone through the internal mic.
2) All tracks must be recorded acoustically - no direct recording.
3) Maximum total expenditure other than phone and computer: $100.

Right now I've spent $59.95 on recording:

MultiTrack basic setup for iPhone: $9.95
20-foot earbud cord so I can position the internal mic where I want: $10.00
Reaper DAW for my computer: $40.00 (although all the songs I've recorded so far were recorded during the 30-day sample period).
Free VST plugins from VSTPlanet.

The instruments were as cheap as they come, but effective:

Cheap 60s sparkle drumset with a couple of cymbals and a Ludwig aluminum snare.
Squier Affinity P-Bass
Squier Classic Vibe '60s Strat
Various guitar pedals
Crate V-18 guitar amp.

I record to the DAW through the internal mic, then put the tracks up on Audacity free editing software on my computer and edit out the noises & extranious parts. I also separate some tracks into multiple tracks to make them easier to work with. I mixed some songs directly on Audacity, but now I move them to Reaper, which is more precise. I intend to ask a friend of mine with some more experience and a decent small recording studio to master them.

Honestly, the main limitation of this setup is my awful monitoring situation using the computer speakers. The low end (which my computer speakers lack) can get kind of odd, hence the necessity of eventually mastering them.

Here are two of them:
