Each time I copy / paste a mono track into a new track, it pastes in stereo, Is there away to keep it mono?

If you paste onto a new track, which has no regions on it, the paste should be the same as what was copied with no conversions. However pasting onto a track that is mono, with stereo data, will convert to mono. And pasting onto a stereo track will always convert to stereo if needed.
