I just want to add I am not using a DAW at this point. I am downloading the video from the dSLR Camera for some clean up before use. It looks to me like the set up discussed in this post involves using a DAW installed on an ipad for processing the sound which is not the case for me. The only function of the laptop is to power the 2i2.

Well, the amount of power that an iPad can provide through usb is limited, so the trick is to use a powered hub to provide more power. This thread is talking about powering the hub with batteries using the Y cable, to remain fully mobile. Or more accurately, powering usb devices through a passive hub.
So without the iPad or laptop requirement, you should be able to just use a powered usb hub or usb power supply, to power the 2i2.
