Another iPhone Recording Blog

I got an iPhone in the early fall, in large part because of the recording and music apps. I was inspired by the Project52 Blog to set up a blog where I will experiment with iPhone recording and composing. I have released three CDs of original songs in the past 15 years. The first one was recorded at Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, MN. Nirvana recorded in Utero there. In the mid-90s it was a very hot place to record. The following two albums have been recorded in my home studio, with some assists via the Internet from musicians on the last one.

I finally recorded a song on the iPhone last week using MultiTrack and have posted it on my blog via SoundCloud. I call the project iPhoniqFolk, as my songwriting tends to fall into folk, blues, old-time country, and singer-songwriter pop.

Here is the link: http://fredgrittner.com/Blog/

My website, http://www.fredgrittner.com lacks music clips at this time but they are available on iTunes and CDBaby. A major overhaul is in progress.

Feel free to post your comments to my blog. Unlike Project52, I won't be posting a new song every week, but I will try to keep trying MultiTrack with the various input options. My next posting will describe how I used the import tracks feature and will also discuss Mikey versus the internal mics when recording acoustic music

I posted an entry today on my blog, iPhoniqFolk, that details the recording of one of my songs using MultiTrack in tandem with the Alesis ProTrack. I used the built-in ProTrack mics, a ribbon mic, and a high-quality dynamic mic. I learned some valuable lessons about the ProTrack and they are all good.

I invite you to take a look and listen to the final mix of the song.

Thanks,

Fred

Fred, Nice stuff! I too am a fan of the SM7B. I've used it for years on all sorts of things. I have one major artist that I've used it on his vocals for many albums. I seem to always use the presence boost. I am using a similar setup as you, just a few more mics. Be encouraged and keep up the art.

Thanks, Keith. I need to try the presence setting. I am taking notes on everything! I am almost done with my fourth album and have to do the vocals. The arrangements are rock-based. I tried the SM7B on the first two songs and couldn't believe how well they sit in the mix without any EQ.

I have posted another blog entry about the recording of a song using MultiTrack, the Alesis ProTrack, Mikey, a stereo ribbon microphone, and the Shure SM7b. The focus was on using the ribbon mic and Mikey. This recording uses more tracks than my previous recordings.

My blog is called iPhoniqFolk and be found here: http://fredgrittner.com/Blog

I hope you will check it out.

I am back after a long absence. I just posted an entry on my blog, iPhoniqfolk, that describes recording, mixing, and exporting/transferring a song in a hotel room using MultiTrack 2. I have posted an mp3 of the recording as is--no remixing on my home computer.

Thanks for reading/listening.
