AB Superlux Pra628mkII vs t.bone EM700

Post by BGR »

Hi everyone. I just wanted to bump things around here a bit.

Here is an AB comparison recording of a mid size piano with two pairs of very inexpensive microphones. It was recorded with Multitrack DAW 5.0.4.

Equipment:
  • iPad 4.
    Harmonicdog Multitrack DAW.
    CCK Lightning to USB.
Tascam US-800 audio interface with +48V Phantom Power turned on.
One pair of t.bone EM700 mics. Gain level: 3 o'clock.
One pair of Superlux Pra628mkII. Yes, Phantom Power is active. Gain level: Maximum.
The microphnes are connected to inputs 3,4,5,6.
    A mid size piano.
    An untreated big rehearsal room.
The original recording was 18 minutes long so I trimmed them with Audacity so they last only a few minutes. Other than that, there is nothing extra done to the original files. No normalization or gain of any sorts.
You will hear some chords with sustain pedal. Then some silence. Followed by a terribly played melody. Then some notes without sustain pedal. And a bit more silence at the end so you can check the noise floor.

Feel free to download and set them up in your favorite DAW so you can hear the subtle differences.

Cool. Is flac audio worthy of inclusion into multitrack as an output format? At one time I wanted to add a lossless compression format to multitack and thought about apple lossless and flac, but then just decided that wav is only about twice as big so forgot about it.

Well, I don't think it would be necessary.

I am in no way a hard core user. I mainly use MTD as a multitrack recorder and then transfer the files to Reaper.

But, wireless and/or USB connections keeps getting faster. Cloud servers also. Transfer times between devices or servers just keep getting smaller. And, hard drives keep getting bigger for those who have big audio collentions.

To cut transfer times with FLAC or ALAC would be a nice bonus to be able to use but not really necessary in my humble opinion. Multitrack DAW is fantastic as it is.

Keep up the great work.
