Yeti and multitrack problem, cannot use device

Hi,

I just received my brand new Blue Yeti which I'm eager to use through camera connector kit and multitrack on my ipad.
However, I don't seem to get nowhere from the starting point.
Everytime I plug the Yeti in to my iPad, the iPad gives me a message "cannot use device, the connected USB device requires too much power".
I haven't been able to get any sound out of the yeti with the iPad.

Is there something I'm missing here? I know there's lots of you who has the same combination and it's working great.

Thanks!

Ubi

Make sure your iPad is fully charged, that could affect the ability of the mic to operate with the iPad.

Let's just say that most USB devices that work with the CCK are temperamental. You may have to plug the Yeti in a few times to get it to connect. It's best to restart your iPad before using MT DAW anyway since it can use a lot of the iPad's limited resources. (Hold the Sleep button on top for 8 seconds, then slide the Off switch on screen and press Sleep again the restart.) I have more luck connecting a USB device after this.

The Yeti draws it's power at just about the limit of the iPad. It's also possible that your Yeti draws a tad more power than other Yetis, which would mean the issue would be more common for you.

I also discovered that the headeset I plug into the Yeti seems to play a part. I actually have less success when I plug in earbuds than when I do my big studio cans.

Hope that helps.

Well I tried connecting the yeti with ipad fully charged and with two different usb cables and the same "too much power" error comes all the time. Also there wasn't difference whether I connected in different ways, on sleep mode, cable to the mic first and vice versa and so on.
I didn't seem to find too much info about this problem around the internet, only different sources telling the yeti + ipad through CCK works like a dream. If the yeti I got gives a little more power than the others you'd expect there's other people experiencing this problem?

But how about the iPad's iOS? I'm using the current beta version of the 4.2. Could that have some affect on this matter?

I also try to connect the mic using powered usb hub later this day, hope that helps. (of course it would be the greatest if I didn't need one, since there shouldn't be the need to)

You might take a look in the developers forum where this specific issue is discussed at some length. I dont mean to be cryptic, but discussing the betas outside the forum is not permitted.

Yeah, you're correct. Let's see if there's something there..

A little bit of update:

I did manage to get the yeti work with powered USB-hub, and of course the multitrack worked as expected!
I still don't know why I'm not able to get the yeti to work without the hub though. Whether this is a problem that comes with the new iOS, I don't know. I'm not a developer, only a tester so I'm not able to access the Dev forums to find out. I hope this all is revealed after the official launch of the 4.2.

At least until then the USB hub's going to let me do some serious mobile recording!

Thanks for the answers!

ubi,

Not sure about signing up for the developer forums, but it used to free and fairly easy to get in. I know there's some kind of small developer fee now if you want to post apps in the app store, but I think it's still free to join, if you want to go to all that trouble.

I know with my Yeti and the original cable, it may take a few tries to connect, but I have always been able to get it work, except once. I tried a few hours later and it was fine. Go figure. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with battery level, but I'm wondering if things like notification and push mail have an effect. That's just a guess since there seems to be no rhyme or reason to any of this.

Glad you have it working by powered USB. When I tried a powered hub, my success rate was about the same as without it.

Let this be a warning about running beta software. You really shouldn't use it unless you are helping to track bugs, despite the way that software has become (all software is beta software, etc.). Unfortunely a beta version does not represent the "best version so far". The power warning is a known issue with the current iOS beta which apple does know about (thanks mostly to DavePDX for letting them know). So if you do run beta software, be prepared for all kinds of broken things.

Thanks pwnified, good point!

Good to know the issue is recognized though. Im able to use the yeti and multitrack together with powered hub, and if the the official release of 4.2 will have this bug covered somehow it's just more good news. but anyway i'm satisfied already!

Thanks anyway for quick replies and great software!
