few questions

Post by ayamahambho »

Somewhat it is difficult for me to gather answers, so I put it in questions that I'd like to get confirmations. And sorry if my english is a little strange; it's not my native language.

Looking for a portable and inexpensive sketchpad/multitrack solution - I went through several hardware options, and it appears that I eventually end with some i-device.

What I need is the possibility to record stereo signal from an external device, and to have at least 4 stereo (or 8 mono) track output. It appears that your app is designed for it. I'm between ipod touch 3rd and 4th gen.

What I need to know about your app:

1. Can I mute the monitoring of incoming input signal, and hear only other recorded tracks while recording this one?

2. Will it work with blue mikey modification proposed by Frank and ipod touch 3rd gen?

3. Will it work with ipod touch 4th gen and "Fostex AR-4i" (some people say that this one works with ipot, although it is designed for iphone; anyone tested it?) or with "Sonoma GuitarJack MkII"?

MultiTrack can stream up to 24 mono or stereo tracks, output to 2 channels.

There are big differences between these two devices, none of the interface options are compatible from one to the other (except the lower quality headset adapter interfaces).
1. Can I mute the monitoring of incoming input signal, and hear only other recorded tracks while recording this one?
Input Monitoring is off by default. To get input monitoring, turn it on in the Menu.
2. Will it work with blue mikey modification proposed by Frank and ipod touch 3rd gen?
Not sure. What does that mod do exactly?
3. Will it work with ipod touch 4th gen and "Fostex AR-4i" (some people say that this one works with ipot, although it is designed for iphone; anyone tested it?) or with "Sonoma GuitarJack MkII"?
I wouldn't recommend the Fostex AR-4i, it's a bulky device and has some noise issues. Not sure it will work with the iPod 4th gen, it fits the iPhone 4 very snuggly. GuitarJack 2 works fine with multitrack. The basic rule of thumb is, "If it works with iOS, it works with MultiTrack DAW"

Not sure. What does that mod do exactly?
According to what I saw - blue mikey enables recording (internal mics or line in) on ipod touch, but when you connect it - it covers headphone output on touch 3rd (smart design isn't it? (-; yep, very smart). So the mod unhides the ipods headphone output. But there was small uncertain thing related to order of connections; first blue mikey and then headphones - otherwise did not worked.

I wonder why there is so much troubble regarding ipods and stereo recording on them (I own iriver h1xx old mp3 player, which has both - line in and even optical in, yet no multitrack options on rockbox are developed although irivers are full-duplex). Is it a matter only extending analog pins (via cable) from dock connector, or there is some other activation pin required? ipods 3rd aren't so new, and for many music people, simple stereo "line in" would be enough.

There's a Blue Mikey 2 that works really with the iPod touch 3rd generation. Instead of breaking the corner off it, you need a dock extender. I have the Mikey 2 and the dock extender and use them quite often. Great for vocals and acoustic guitar.

@Anorton
Is the dock extender like this? Following keywords from your links, just found on ebay. The difference seems to be in price (about 3 times in euro).

I assume you have blue mikey ver. 2.0 - and I assume it also has stereo line-in? What is the difference between 2.0 and earlier?

Yes, the doc extender is a good solution, I've used the one from buyijet, it comes with a right angle headphone adapter (which doesn't support headset with mic, only headphones, which is good in this case because you want the microphone in the Mikey, right?)
and they have a slim version: http://www.buyijet.com/top-products/iextend-slim.html

That mod sounds dangerous, but it wouldn't have any problems with MultiTrack. Input/output selection is still done through iOS, and order matters (last thing plugged in takes priority).

I don't know what the differences are between the original Mikey and version 2. Version 2 does have a line in and a USB pass through, which allows for simultaneous charging. I'm very happy with it.

Here is a link to a song done on my iPod touch 3 which I used Mikey 2 on for vocals and acoustic guitar:

I don't know if all dock extenders are the same. I bought mine about a year ago because a representative from Blue Microphones said it was the only one that worked at the time. If the others don't work, you could probably return them.
