Thanks for all the suggestions folks. I will look into some of them in the coming days.
I put together a very short sample in the made with forum if there is any interest.

Re: So Close...
Thanks for starting this thread. It's great to have another facet of expression here. I just thought I'd add one more: I am a singer/songwriter and love what the app is and where it seems to be going. My device is a 32 gig iPod touch. As you said in your eloquent opening to this thread, I'm building my songs one track at a time. I'm using Beatmaker for "drums" and amazed at how great they sound. I did have to go to a website to find samples in order to create a couple of custom acoustic drum kits that suit my music. I am not a technology wiz, buy have found Beatmaker fairly easy to use. Here is the link to rhe samples if anyone's interested. The Gretsch acoustic kit has a killer snare and kick.

I'm using the iRig for electric bass and guitar. I'm going direct to MT with the bass and have used a combination of real pedals and the Ampkit guitar app for my electric guitar parts. As reported, the iRig has some crosstalk issues but I've been able to make it work for me. I'm waiting for pwnified's report on the ampkit link as a guitar interface. I'm hoping it's at least a bit better than the iRig when used with the Ampkit app. I think that app has enormous possibilities for the singer/songwriter type.
My purposes are purely personal. I'm done with gigs and bands and have a family. Sometimes my house is a zoo so I love the portability of MT. I've sung harmony parts in parking lots, recorded electric guitar in my backyard, and recorded acoustic guitar on my front porch. I welcome some reverb, EQ, compression, and a more convenient way to get guitar sounds from a guitar app to MultiTrack.

I noticed this is a very old thread. The zed 10 only just arrived at my local music store. What is the final verdict on the zed10, now that you've had some time with it?

Over at Sweetwater.com, they have a video blog for iOs (mostly iPad info) that includes a video about simultaneous multi tracking using an interface that they sell (I think it was 16 simultaneous tracks). You might want to go look for that. I don't remember if they were using MT Daw or something else.
