Hi,
On my itouch I can use MTD's open in function to transfer wavs to the GoodReader app, which then allows local transfer to my iPad. V.seamless. Yet, on my iPad inside MTD, if I use open in, GoodReader isn't listed - I installed the itouch version of GR to see if that made a difference, but it didn't. Ideally I'd like to use GR on all my iOS devices as local transfer is quickest...

Re: Open in Goodreader
The apps listed in the "Open in" listbox are added by Apples framework, so Open In will only list apps that have registered for opening that specific file type. It sounds like goodreader can't open audio files.

Re: Open in Goodreader
GoodReader plays audio files just fine. This is a limitation of Apple's poor implementation of "Open in...". Basically, iOS is limited to listing 10 apps and there's no documentation or control over which 10 apps get listed. Some of us have been pleading with Apple for years to fix this.
The only workaround I'm aware of is to uninstall some of the apps that show up in the list until the one you want rises high enough to display. Open a file with that app, and the you can usually reinstall the apps you deleted.
But as far as I can tell, the install order or use by "Open in" aren't the only factors. Sometimes installing apps that are registered for the file type will affect the list order in seemingly random ways.

I see. I wasn't aware of this 10 app limit your talking about, thanks for pointing that out. We should probably file bug reports about it, this is a serious limitation. And the algorithm they are using (most used apps listed first) has the side effect of not even showing newly installed apps at all! Doh!
If anyone wants to file a bug report with Apple about this issue, use the bug reporter tool:
You'll need a developer ID, which is free, but still a hassle if you don't have one.
http://bugreport.apple.com/
Another way is the feedback tool, which can be used to file bug reports:
http://www.apple.com/feedback/
Apple uses duplicate reports to gauge the seriousness of bugs, so the more the better!

DavePDX, does this still happen with iOS6? Apple has reportedly fixed it, with the new Open In interface, but I can't test it as I don't have 10 apps that can open a file type

Re: Open in Goodreader
It does appear to be fixed... sort of. "Open in..." now has a multi-page interface (similar to the home screen). I checked an m4a attachment (created with MultiTrack), and it showed 11 apps that could open it. I then downloaded another audio app, and the same file then showed 12 apps. Yahoo!
Alas, when I tried to ACTUALLY open them, there was no response with most of the apps, including MultiTrack DAW. One happy exception was DropBox, which now let me upload the file!
Some apps, like GoodReader, throw an error message. Now here's the curious part. In my email, the attachment was named with a .m4a extension, but Open in CHANGED it to .aac! After renaming the file in GoodReader, it played just fine.
In DropBox, the file extension was also changed, and likewise, and had to manually change it back in order to play it.
Oh my.

Cool, thanks for the info, I've closed that apple bug for the 10 file max, and I'll look into the next issue (file extensions changed, apps not opening).

How do you get to "open in..." in MTD on the iPad (I still have ios 5 installed)
Thanks!

Open your project, tap on any track rail, then tap on "bins" when the hotbox menu comes up. You'll see tabs for "song", "shared", and "iPod". Individual tracks are in the song bin, mixdowns and imported files are in the shared bin, and your iPod library is in the iPod bin.iPadawan wrote:Hi,gdog wrote:...on my iPad inside MTD, if I use open in, GoodReader isn't listed...
