Parametric EQ?

Post by Anamnesis »

Can someone tell me what "Q" stands for?

Also, what is the story with the dB controls on the left side of the app versus the controls on the right side of the app.

Parametric EQ is new to me and I'm having a hard time dialing in a decent sound on acoustic guitar, mostly finger picked and using an iRig and a condenser mic.

Thanks

Q is the bandwidth, or thickness, of the band being controlled. So a higher Q will affect a width swath of frequencies. The best way to visualize this is see it in the screen above.

The dB controls on the left are for the shelving controls, they are essentially bass and treble controls.

I've found the best way to adjust a parametric is to first "find" the frequency you want to control, so artificially boost the dB to a high value. Bring the Q up to about 1 or 2 oclock. Now adjust the kHz until you find the frequency. It's important to use your ears for this so multitrack must be actually playing the track. Once the frequency is "highlighted" you can drop the dB (or raise it, depending on the goal).

Hope this helps.
