Scarlet 18i6 issues with iPad

Post by grunshaw »

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has any experience in using the Scarlet 18i6 with the iPad? I am running into some difficulties at the moment and could use some advice, suggestions, etc.

OK, let me break it down for you, then briefly list my exact equipment.

Whenever i record, I hear popping, like when you plug in a guitar or phantom powered mic to an unmuted channel - then, all of a sudden, it stops and nothing comes through the headphones. MT still is recording, but whenever I listen back to it, where it dropped out, the last 2 seconds of the recording are repeating just like a broken record. Unplugging the AC adapter from the back of the Scarlet and replugging it in solves the issue, until it happens again, at which point I have to repeat that step. It's fairly random, but I never seem to get more than 17 minutes of recording before it does happen.

Here is what I have:
- iPad Mini (original)
- Shark Camera Connection Kit (not Apple)
- USB Cable
- 8 things plugged into the Scarlet
- Cheap extension cord

Here is what I have tried:
- Restarting the iPad
- Switching out the USB cable
When doing this, I couldn't get MT to even recognize the Scarlet, so I switched it back and it appeared again

Here is what I am thinking:
- Could be faulty unit
- Try and replace the extension cord it is plugged in to
- Replace the camera connection kit with official Apple model
- Place a powered USB hub between the camera connection kit and Scarlet
- Try it on a Windows machine

I have used my EXACT same setup with a different interface (the Lexicon Omega) and it worked flawlessly.

I have noticed using the Scarlet uses more battery on the iPad when recording than the Omega di, even when using 4 tracks. Strange, because both devices are AC powered, so is teh Scarlet drawing more power from USB for some reason?

Is it my iPad, can it not handle this, should i be thinking about upgrading (which I am going to be doing anyway soon)?

Has anyone experienced this or a similar problem, if so, how did you fix it?

Thanks in advance,
James.

I would suspect the non-Apple connection kit.
I don't think you need a hub, but there is a program I believe, to setup the I/O for use with an iPad.
iPad Air, Akai EIE (the red one), Griffin Studioconnect, Alesis IO Dock, Blue Yeti mic.
