mono vs stereo with alesis io dock

I've got the io Dock and an IPad 2. I don't know how to record where my input is stereo...when I plug in my guitar or mic, it only records to one side, either left or right. How can I get it to record in stereo with one track?

By default a track will arm as stereo, if a stereo input is available. It sounds like you're getting a stereo track, because the audio is fully right or left, but the ioDock isn't letting you get both at once? That doesn't make sense. Does the track show a stereo waveform?

This is correct. When I plug in a mic or a guitar the stereo left and right show up but it only records on one or the other...not both at the same time.
