Error Message When Attempting to "Open in"

Post by owllasers »

Hello!

When I tap "Open In" from a song selected in the Shared tab, I'm receiving an error that reads as follows:
__________________________________________

"Can't open. No installed apps can open type 'm4a.'"
__________________________________________

I normally use this option to AirDrop to a nearby computer rather than opening the file elsewhere on the iPad, but according to this message, that option isn't available either, though I used it just last night. I've confirmed that Airdrop is enabled on my iPad and on the computer.

I'm not sure whether this is related, but figured I'd drop it here as well: I used to email the mixed tracks to myself, but at some point, I found that the email wouldn't send - that it would just get stuck in my Outbox unless I deleted it. This doesn't appear to be related to storage availability on the iPad or to sending limits on my email account because I'm able to email this kind of attachment just fine from a computer.

Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Hi Jeremy,

That sounds really strange. Something might have gotten corrupted in iOS, like the extensions registration so iOS doesn't know how to open files of a certain type. MultiTrack simply asks the system to present the system supplied sharing dialogbox, if it returns nothing, multitrack will present the message. There really isn't anything that can go wrong on multitracks side. First try a reboot and if that doesn't work, update to iOS 10 :)

Some versions of iOS 9 have the stuck email issue when sending large attachments. iOS 10 will fix that.

Thanks for the advice! I had been avoiding updating my iPad to iOS 10 just because it is an older model, but I went for it. That seems to have resolved the email issue. I haven't had a chance to check the Airplay issue, however, so I'll keep you posted on that.

Hello. Sorry for the delay. I was just recently able to test the Airplay function, and while the email function continues to operate normally, I still rec'v that same error when I tap, "Open In."

Hmm, well if there are no other apps on the device that can open m4a the sharing pane will never open. Make sure there is a least one other app on the device that can open audio files (AudioShare is a good one to try)

But this is an interesting problem, that audio can't be shared to dropbox / google drive / Airdrop / etc when there are no other apps that can open audio files on the device. Let us know if that's not it.

Well, as far as I know, the only apps I have on my iPad that would be able to open such a file would be iTunes and Mail, but I don't think either would accept the file from that prompt. That is, Mail would, of course, only accept the file as an emailed attachment, and iTunes would only accept it from either syncing or from a purchase. I'll try Audioshare, and get back to you. In the past I've always rec'd the prompt to use Airdrop, however.
