Bought a Behringer UCA-202 USB sound card today and have been successfully recording some synths into it to test it. Seems to work really well, monitor the imput via headphones in the sound card so it's zero latency. Sound quality is pretty good for a $60 card (Australian). I wouldn't call it a "high end" sound, more of an "indie" sound but it is nice and clear and most importantly it works! Very little hiss at all if you fiddle with levels etc. Pleasantly surprised. Hope this setup works well for people who need to use a microphone as well. By the way every music program on the iPad output it audio to the behringer to my speakers without any trouble.
Good luck peoples.

Cool. Mine should be arriving today from amazon, I got the UCA222 and I'm pretty confident it'll work. BTW, I just tested the cheapest USB device I could find:

It was 10 bucks and works fine! Mono input only though.
