Alesis IO Dock inputs reversed

Post by martygras »

I just bought an Alesis IO Dock and I am experiencing something weird. The 2 inputs are reversed.
I tested this in MultiTrack and GarageBand and got the same results. I updated the IO Dock's firmware to 1.07, and rebooted the iPad, but still had the same issues.

After Googling for hours I finally found one post for another recording program, "Studio Six Digital".
They reported that the Alesis IO Dock reversed inputs unless they recorded at 44.1KHz instead of 48KHz, and that only reduced the occurrence of reversed inputs, but did not fully eliminate the problem.

Until I read that it sounded like a hardware issue, but tried it anyway.

In MultiTrack, if I start a new project at 48KHz (either 16 or 24 bit) the inputs appear as they should, and I can repeat the same results.
GarageBand must be set at 44.1KHz so it is always reversed.
Although the dock appears to work just fine apart from the reversal of inputs I'm worried that something is wrong with its hardware and it will blow up just when I need it most.
Has anyone encountered this or have any insight into this problem?

[update]
I've now tried this with a 1st gen iPad and an iPad 2 with identical results.

[Update 2]
Apparently the 48KHz sample rate fix does not work 100% of the time.

Here's the response I received from Alesis tech support:
"Thanks for contacting us!
The IO Dock’s input layout is different than the traditional layout, with the “Right” channel on the left, and the “Left” channel on the right. This is completely normal, expected behavior.
If you have any further inquiries or comments, please feel free to respond to this message!"

????

[Update 3]
Received a call from an Alesis tech who was very knowledgeable and personable. This call comes only 1 day after my email reply to him. Wow, very impressed.
He assured me that the inputs are indeed seen by GarageBand and other apps as reversed. The only issue he could not confirm was the inputs "flipping" when used in MultiTrack DAW under 48KHz.
His assessment was that it is, "most likely" an iOS issue with the 30 pin input.
Currently I'm at 6.0.1 and there is a new update on the way apparently.

I have not experienced any of the static or loud bursts of white noise reported way back in the iOS 5.0 era so I am feeling better about the dock already.

Now to test the midi capabilities and the footswitch options which seem esoteric even after all this time.
iPad Air, Akai EIE (the red one), Griffin Studioconnect, Alesis IO Dock, Blue Yeti mic.

Not sure why Alesis decided to go 100% opposite of the industry standard of 1 being left and 2 being right. My iodock has this behavior, under any samplerate (48khz projects are still reversed). It's at hardware version 1.0.0 and firmware 1.0.7.

I was going to by one of these but the new radical definition of the "traditional" left and right side of things, where right is understood to be on the right but is now on the left, and left being on the right, errr, where it was on the left, perplexes me completely!!!

Bet they wouldn't sell many shoes if they decided to change industry......
