EQ for acoustic guitar

Post by Gregmartin64 »

I'm just starting with home recording and I've noticed that although recording my acoustic (12 string) while playing single strings sounds good. When I record chords it's sounds "muddy" and not very clear. Hope that makes sense. Does anyone have a recommended track setting for EQ and compression that could make the chords sound brighter?

In fact it would be nice to have some presets in the application for vocals and acoustics ;)

Any help appreciated.

It might be the microphone and how it handles complex sounds. Especially if the midrange is saturating you will get this effect. I would recommend trying to change out components in the system if possible, and playing with input levels. If you are using the internal microphone, make sure to enable "Measurement mode" in the multitrack section of the system settings (the Settings app, on your iPad)

In my experience, the location of the mic is critical for acoustic guitar.
Every guitar is different, but I've had a lot of luck with placing the mic in front of the guitar, about 8-12 inches from the soundhole and pointing it towards the highest fret. This also prevents the strumming hand from getting in between the mic and the guitar while allowing some movement without changing the tone too much.
Adding a second mic (studio condenser mic) about 3-4 feet in front can be mixed in to give the sound some room ambience if you have access to one.
iPad Air, Akai EIE (the red one), Griffin Studioconnect, Alesis IO Dock, Blue Yeti mic.
