Hiss

Post by Gregmartin64 »

I'm still new to this application on my iPad 3. But unless I set the output level down to around -7 and the input down I get quite a lot a noise when I'm recording. I've tried this with an irig mic and also the irig adapter for an XLR microphone, and also with the standard apple headset and microphone. Any ideas?

Well, the headset input is on the lower end of the quality scale. But the amount if hiss shouldn't be unbearable, of course noise level is a relative term and will mean something different to every individual. But definitely keep the input fader to the maximum without clipping, this will raise the signal to noise level and lower the noise floor.

Thanks. Though to be honest I don't really know what some of those terms mean, so I'll probably need to read up a bit. I've sort of always relied on recording studios in the distant past and sort of left it to people who knew what they were doing :?

Multitrack has definitely given me the very best results and far better than the vocalive application I was using with my irig mic, lots of effects in vocalive but maybe at the expense of great quality. So I'm hoping to use multitrack to produce my own CD from.

What I'm noticing is there is a hum/hiss before I start playing and recording, this seems to disappear when the recording is taking place but then fades back in. I'm using a AKG D65S mic through an iRig XLR adapter.

Your other reply makes me think I may need to improve my mic and maybe cut out using the standard iPad input socket and go USB.
