Punch in is a way to start recording automatically. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Punching_in Punching in is sort of a remnant of when MultiTrack didn't have regions and bins. Now you can just use a new track to record and then just copy/paste the new trimmed region onto the old track, without worring about overwriting the track (i.e. it's non-destructive, whereas earlier version of multiTrack used destructive editing)
