Laptop DAW to supplement DAW with more control (fades, etc)?

Does anyone recommend any software to supplement DAW that has a bit more control? For example, fades on the tracks, insert edit points or keyframes for increasing/reducing volume or adding effects.

DAW is great, but to have that last bit of control, I'd like sthing on the laptop to do a final mix.
