Can't see waveform (too small)

Post by martygras »

I guess this is a feature request.
I'm trying to slice up some drum beats, many of which are recorded slightly low in volume or start with a hi-hat on the "one". The waveform is so small that I can't see where to slice and am forced to use trial and error.
A way to zoom in on the waveform vertically would fix this, but a "skip to next transient" would be very useful as well.

Anyone else experiencing this, or have a workaround that's better than trial and error?

If you can identify the BPM of the song, you can use the ruler to guide you. I've been able to, through trial and error, to get the exact BPM of several .wav drum tracks. Turn on the metronome's "click in play" function. Eventually you can dial in the tempo when the metronome and the drum track are in sync. if the drum track is on the money, this will work, just use the ruler for your slice points. There have been a few drum tracks that I couldn't dial in the exact BPM, though. There's probably an easier way, but I've been learning this all on the fly. I'm having a ball too! I'd love to hear other solutions/workarounds. Good luck.

You could also do a "loud" mixdown of the original file with some processing done in MultiTrack or another app. Then paste that track next to the your original as a guide. The processing and added gain should produce a more visible waveform.

Anorton, those are both excellent ideas.
Although still workarounds, I'm a few beats behind you in that I am still doing what you said about using the timeline to determine the tempo. I'm in the "error" phase of the trial and error part. :)

I usually know the tempo before recording, but once in a while I'll take some randomized beats from Reaktor, and just play them into MultiTrack DAW to slice up later so I can pasteboard them into Glitchbreaks.

Thanks man.

This reminds me of the problem with plugins. Always collecting vsti's and patches, but never getting around to writing music.
