transferring recordings to PC

Post by miden »

Is there any way OTHER than wifi, to transfer recordings for processing to a PC daw? (eg Sonar)?

My PC does not have any wifi capability.

Thanks

There are many ways to get a mixdown to the computer, but most involve Wi-Fi networking of some kind. With SoundCloud upload or email, it can also be done with 3G on iPhone. For a USB transfer, the mixdown can be got through iTunes File Sharing.

With Bins or Tracks, then the options are limited. Wi-Fi will give you access to rendered tracks and the Bins, and so far is the only way to get the rendered tracks out. The raw Bins can be copy/pasted into other apps that allow other forms of networked sharing (Dropbox, for example). Mixdowns can also be copy/pasted (from the Bin Browser -> Shared tab)

For a hacky/unsupported way to transfer the raw Bins over usb, you could try iExplorer. It gives you access to the file structure of the device from a PC or mac. See this thread for how to set it up: http://forum.harmonicdog.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=633
There is a folder (called Bins) which contains all the audio in the song in wav format. The filenames are weird, but can be renamed once on the PC.

Thanks, I will give that a go...

Just in case I do get wifi, perhaps a PCI card of some sort, is there a step by step guide for transferring the bare tracks, not a mixdown, to my PC daw?

A wifi enabled router works really well.
My studio pc is hard-wire only(no wifi), cat5 cable direct to router with wifi enabled, and with my ipad on the same home network via the same router i am able to move content easily.
I use the same network connection to use the ipad as a control surface for recording software. It works fantastically.

Hi Don,

Thanks m8, can you tell me what program you are using? I just downloaded that iExplorer from the link pwnified posted...

I have used a program called WinSCP....would that work?

Thanks

WOW!!! That iExplorer program really works. Apart from one small bug (apparently in iTunes as well) that only allows access to 5 app folders in a session....

I can see every folder and file I have on the iPad...

So @pwnified.....the process for getting the recorded audio, would be documents/hidden/song(x)/bins

Yes?
And in what form is the audio IN the bins

Thanks

With the set up in my last post...
On my ipad2- with multi track daw running...
Close the current project to expose the project list page
At the bottom of the page...touch the wifi button
The ipad's ip address with port number for access is now shown...

On my studio pc, with the ipad still running mt daw- open web browser(i use firefox)...
Enter the ip address exactly as shown in the multitrack daw project screen at the bottom
Your projects will show up in the browser on a web page
You can go in to your projects and download bins etc to your pc.
Lots of choices, you can download a project zip that looks like it contains all "active" tracks, but the names are funky. I usually just grab the tracks one by one. (i'm *guessing* that the tracks that are grabbed from the project are rendered with track fx- eq, compression etc- if i want the raw wav files i make sure to disable all track fx before starting the above process. Perhaps someone with more knowledge on this will chime in to confirm wether or not my *guessing* is correct.)

i hope this helps you out,

Don

That is terrific Don, yes it helps a lot :-)

So the audio files on MT DAW are in WAV format? That would be perfect....and your method there is so simple and easy...

Yes everything comes out as wav files, including my drum, and orchestral tracks imported from other apps as m4a files via email. (that's why i dropped that question earlier in the thread about *guessing*)
Crazy simple, portable bit of kit MT DAW is...a big part of making my ipad purchase worthwhile for me.
